ISOC, CDT and GPD announce launch of Global Encryption Coalition

On Thursday 14 May, the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), Internet Society (ISOC) and Global Partners Digital (GPD) will jointly launch the Global Encryption Coalition.

The Coalition—comprising a range of civil society groups worldwide—will act as a “coalition of coalitions”, amplifying advocacy efforts where they already exist, identifying gaps, and connecting activists to resources and contacts. It launches on Thursday with five free public webinars, bringing together a range of experts to explore the specific importance of encryption in the context of COVID-19.

GPD will be hosting a webinar discussion with a range of experts—including UN Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy, Joseph Cannataci, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy—focused on the “Five Eyes”, and what debates around encryption and exceptional access might look like as the countries in this grouping emerge from the pandemic. The other four webinars will focus on Canada and the European Union, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
